Preventing Carpet Mold

Shampooing and steam-cleaning the carpets alone won’t kill off mold; when carpets are still damp, mold colonies can redevelop quickly. Keep your carpets mold free by steam-cleaning with a vinegar, alcohol, and cleaning solution mixed with warm water regularly.

Quick Tips To Prevent Carpet Mold

Keep all rooms in the house well ventilated. Use dehumidifiers if necessary to reduce moisture in the air.
Avoid laying carpet in the bathroom; use tiles or other non-porous materials for bathroom floors.
Hang bathmats and towels up to dry after each use. Launder these in a hot cycle with a vinegar rinse at least once a week to sanitize them.
Make sure that damp items are never directly in contact with floors for any length of time – the bottoms of indoor plant pots, for example.

Happy Autumn From Bella Mold Removal!

Get your home ready for Fall with these great tips:

Mold Removal Chicago Water Damage Restoration Chicago 1. Lower humidity and cooler (not yet cold) temperatures make fall a good time to paint the exterior of your home.

2. Inspect your roof, or hire a licensed professional to examine your roof for wear and tear. If the shingles are curling, buckling or crackling, replace them. If you have a lot of damage, it's time to replace the entire roof. Also, check the flashing around skylights, pipes and chimneys. If you have any leaks or gaps, heavy snow and ice will find its way in.

3. To prevent exterior water pipes from bursting when the weather gets below freezing, turn off the valves to the exterior hose.

4. Run water until pipes are empty. Make sure that all of the water is drained from the pipes. If not the water can freeze up and damage the pipes.

Water Damage Chicago Mold Removal | Bella Mold Removal | Air Quality

Ways To Improve Home Air Quality

Is important to keep air pollution out of your home! Help maintain your health and home with these great tips.

1. Mold thrives in humid areas. Try to keep the humidity level in your home below 50% (you may want to purchase a dehumidifier), and always ensure proper ventilation in damp areas such as bathrooms.

2. Even when the weather is cool, open the windows to let in fresh air (especially while you're cleaning, cooking, or painting). If it's simply too cold, run ceiling fans to keep air circulating.

3. Candles, cigarettes, and wood-burning fireplaces all release pollutants that worsen air quality and can even trigger health problems. To help keep your home's air clean, buy only non-toxic candles.

4. Commercial air fresheners can contain harmful pollutants. Rather than spraying chemicals to freshen your home, simmer a pot of cinnamon and cloves. Or consider natural alternatives such as vaporizers that rely on essential oils instead of chemicals. Look for pure essential oils not 'essential fragrances' or 'natural perfumes'.

The Difference Between Mold And Mildew

Mildew is a surface fungi that can easily be identified as a patch of gray or even white fungus that is lying on the surface of a moist area. Mildew is easily treated with a store bought cleaner and a scrubbing brush.

Mold, on the other hand, can be black or green and is often the result of a much larger infestation. This type of fungus can appear almost "fuzzy" — especially when it is found on food — or even slimy in nature.

The Truth About Mold

Mold comes in thousands of different strains. Only a few including the notorious Stachybotrys Chartarum (also known as black mold) produce toxins. Researchers acknowledge that these toxins are potent enough to cause serious health problems. There is still debate on the magnitude mold exposure has on health conditions.

There is plenty of evidence that all molds can cause rashes, headaches, dizziness, nausea, allergic reactions (like hay fever), and asthma attacks. In people with weakened immune systems, they can cause serious lung infections.

Remodeling After Water Damage Tips

Remodeling after a flood or water damage can be expensive and difficult. There are multiple steps you must do to insure your remodel runs smooth and headache free. Hiring the right water restoration technicians, contacting your insurance and getting the right construction crew are just a few steps in the process.

If you are staying at the property, be prepared for life on a construction site. Put up dust barriers between the work zones and living zones. There will be dust and paint fumes for quite some time. Cover the vents in the construction area. If you skip this step, you will circulate all the dust and fumes throughout the property despite attempts to seal them off.

Water Damage Chicago Mold Removal | Bella Mold Removal | Water Damage Categories

The Three Categories of Water Damage

There usually is a 24 to 48 hour window from the time something gets wet until mold can begin to grow. After that amount of time has passed, mold will begin to grow and multiply rapidly. When mold growth is widespread, you may need to hire a professional to safely treat and remove the mold.

Water Damage is Categorized into three levels based on how polluted the water source was that caused the damage and cleanliness of affected material.

Category 1: Water from a clean water source, like a fresh water line connected to a dishwasher. This water will not cause illness.

Category 2: Water that may have bacteria in it, such as rainwater or a toilet bowl overflow without waste. This water may cause illness.

Category 3: Water that is highly contaminated. Contact will cause severe illness. Sewage backups, toilet bowl backups with waste.

Even though water may start as one Category such as Category 1, that doesn't mean it will stay that way for very long. Any material that the water makes contact with such as dirty carpeting or soil from the ground can change the water to Category 2.

If this water soaks into the ground or floorboards it can begin to breed bacteria and escalate the water to Category 3. The longer water is left, the more of a chance mold will begin to grow. This escalates the cost of Restoration greatly.

Taking Care of Fire And Smoke Damage

Quick action is the only way to minimize the destruction. Though heavy residues require the assistance of professional restoration technicians, a certified technician may be contacted for any amount of smoke damage.

Remember safety comes first.
Do not enter the property without proper work gloves and appropriate respiratory protection. Exposure to soot residue causes respiratory distress and other medical emergencies.

Bring along A few box fans.
Upon entering the property open the windows and place the box fans in the windows to force out the contaminated air and dust. Proper ventilation helps to prevent further smoke damage and reduces potential injury to people.

Remove loose smoke contamination with a professional dry cleaning soot sponge.

Clean every surface with soap and water.
Begin at the top and work down to the floor. Be sure to get inside cabinets and cupboards.

Use a high efficiency vacuum cleaner with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) Filter.
A good filtration system on a high efficiency vacuum prevents the soot from being blown back into the cleaned space. Clean or change the filter regularly.

Launder bedding, clothes, curtains, and other washable materials.
An alkaline cleaner neutralizes the acid found in the soot. Fine materials should be professionally dry-cleaned by a dry-cleaner who is experienced in smoke damaged articles.

Clean the exterior walls and eaves using a water hose attached to the proper cleaner.
Agitate and loosen stuck-on soot. The smoke damage to the outside of the property will continue until the soot is removed.

Water Damage Chicago Mold Removal | Bella Mold Removal | Mold Allergens

Mold Allergens In Your Home

Allergy season is here but outside isn't the only place allergens occur. "Up to one-third of children are allergic to mold (only pollen allergy is more common). Inhaling spores - the invisible airborne seeds of mold - can cause sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, wheezing, and coughing" specific locations, like the basement or outside after you've mowed, and also if his symptoms persist beyond spring pollen season (generally March to June).

If your pediatrician thinks that mold may be the culprit, she'll probably refer you to an allergist for testing. The allergist will lightly prick your child's skin with a needle containing common allergens and watch for a hive-like reaction. "The skin test is the gold standard for identifying allergies and finding the treatment that is the most effective," according to Stuart Abramson, MD, PhD, a pediatric allergist and immunologist at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. When your child is mildly allergic, avoiding exposure may be the only treatment she needs.

If your child's allergy is severe, a combination of an over-the-counter antihistamine, like Claritin or Zyrtec, and a prescription inhaled nasal steroid, such as Flonase or Nasonex, should help. Immunotherapy shots against mold are available, but experts say they aren't always effective. During our own cleanup after the hurricane, we sealed our daughters' bedroom door to keep the mold spores contained, and then we tore out the wet Sheetrock and carpet. Within days, Emily's wheezing subsided, and I'd learned a valuable lesson: If you can't prevent mold, get rid of it as fast as possible.

Water Damage Chicago Mold Removal | Bella Mold Removal | Flood Protection

Protecting Your Property Before, During, And After A Flood

Tornado season is upon us and flood damage is comes along with it.

There are so many things you can do to prevent or minimize water damage to your home, stop mold growth and prevent a headache! Check out these great tips from travelers.com

Before The Flood:

Know your properties flood zone risk and evaluate your flood risk with this reference guide from IBHS.
Have your furnace, water heater and other permanent equipment elevated above the expected flood levels of your area.
Inspect sump pumps and drains regularly to ensure proper operation.
If you own a generator, have a licensed electrician provide a transfer switch to your sump pump so you can operate it in the event of flooding.
To help prevent sewage backup, have a licensed plumber install an interior or exterior backflow prevention valve.
Keep sandbags on hand to help divert unusually high water away from your foundation.
In snowy climates, flag drains to avoid plowing snow on top of them.
Learn the flood alert signals of your community.
Collect emergency building materials if you live in a frequently flooded area. These may include plywood, plastic sheeting, lumber, nails, shovels and sandbags.
Plan and practice an evacuation route. Designate a place for family members to meet in the event they become separated.
Review with all family members how to shut off utilities in an emergency.
Plan a survival kit with important documents, including insurance documents, medications and critical items in the event you need to leave your home.

During The Flood:

Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for the latest storm information. If advised to evacuate, shut off all utilities and evacuate immediately.
Move to high ground, avoid rising waters and do not walk or drive through any floodwaters.
Stay away from downed power lines and electrical wires.

After The Flood:

Listen to the radio and do not return home until authorities indicate it is safe to do so.
Once allowed back into your home, inspect it for damage. If your property has been damaged, promptly report the loss.
Be watchful of snakes that may have found their way into your home.
Throw away all food that has come in contact with floodwaters.
Remove standing water as quickly as possible, including from your basement. If your basement is flooded, pump out about 1/3 of the water per day to avoid structural damage.
Properly dry or remove soaked carpets, padding and upholstery within 24-48 hours after a flood to prevent mold growth. Discard anything that cannot be properly dried.
Wash and disinfect all areas that have been flooded. This includes walls, floors, closets and shelves, as well as heating and air-conditioning systems.
Do not energize electrical or electronic equipment that may have suffered water damage without first having a qualified electrician inspect and/or test it.
